According to multiple reports in the UK and Italy, Manchester United have made an initial bid for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, but it has already been rejected by the Serie A club.

Pogba, 23, left Old Trafford for Juventus on a free transfer in 2012, but with Jose Mourinho taking over at United, there has been a big push to bring the France international back to the club.

The Guardian suggested that United CEO Ed Woodward tabled an offer of £100 million in a meeting with Juve director Beppe Marotta. That offer, the paper said, included an £87 million fee and an additional £13 million in performance-related add-ons.

Marotta and the Old Lady, however, rejected that offer and are holding out for a fee of £100 million plus £8 million in add-ons, the Guardian later reported. That would make Pogba the most expensive purchase in the history of the game.

While United continue to chase Pogba, Mourinho could be set to wield the axe by cutting four first-team stars. It's bad news forJuan Mata, Daley Blind, Marcos RojoandMorgan Schneiderlin,according to the Mail.

It is hard to read the tea leaves here, but Blind, Rojo and Mata are in the squad for United's preseason tour. Is Mourinho showcasing them for transfer purposes or seeing how they fit in the team?

Whatever the answer, the Special One appears ready to be ruthless as the season draws ever nearer, and that means a fire sale is a distinct possibility in the coming weeks.
