Breaking: Sevilla dismantle Liverpool to emerge Europa League champions

Coke celebrates his goal with team mates

Sevilla football club of Spain have defeated Liverpool to win the Europa League for an unprecedented third straight successive time.

The Sevillistas Los Rojiblancos came from behind to defeat Jurgen Klopp’s men 3 – 1 at the St. Jakob-Park stadium in Basel.

Liverpool took charge of the first half as Daniel Sturridge who was outstanding in the first 45 minutes had his effort cleared off the line in the 11th minute to deny the Reds an early goal.

Goalkeeper David Soria made another important block when he rushed out to deny Sturridge yet again in the 24th minute.

The moment Sturridge struck

After so much efforts, the Reds were rewarded with a goal when Sturridge fired the ball into the far corner of the post in the 34th minute to put his side ahead.

Although the same player got the ball into the back of the net for a second time, the centre referee denied the English side the second goal, as it appeared Sturridge had made contact with the ball in an offside position.

Both teams went into the break with Liverpool ahead 1 – 0.

Sevilla restored parity just seconds into the second half as Kevin Gameiro put his side right back into the game, and immediately, the defending champions took control of the game.

Coke slides into celebrations after a goal

Coke struck 64th minute as he expertly guided the ball past Mignolet to put the Spanish side ahead and just six minutes later, the Sevilla captain netted his brace after squeezing-in what look like an offside move. It ended Liverpool 1 – 3 Sevilla.

As a result, Sevilla will now cruise straight into the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Before the game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had hinted that he was not sure his side could beat the defending champions.

“There is no frustration. Before a final I think only about a performance. All you can do is win or lose! All the teams I have had in finals performed really well and had close games, so I am not frustrated with my final record. Sure, I could have won more, but that is how it is.”he said.

Liverpool who came eight in the English Premier League will have no place in Europe next season.
