Jose Mourinho To Manchester United - The Pros & Cons

The rumored appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager at Manchester United has begun to make waves with every source quoted, every interview looked into depth, and the “it’s over” statement from Louis van Gaal scrutinized like a presidential speech.

It has clouded the celebrations over the triumph in the F.A Cup after a twelve year wait and while Old Trafford might sound unanimous in joy over the rumored appointment there are still grumbles in some quarters at this decision. We take a look at the five pros and cons of hiring the Special One.

THE CONs.

Youth Ignorance:

Mourinho has rarely showed the patience to utilize young players, trusting experienced and established players to do the job and this has caused worry with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, and Timothy Fosu Mensah breaking out recently. Many fear the tradition of bringing players through the ranks would come to an end for established players.

Youthful Exuberance:
If there’s anything youth associated with Mourinho it would be his youthful exuberance. From poking opposition’s eyes, clashing with referees, media rants, to his recent touchline display over Eva Carneiro’s actions, the fear of Mourinho dragging Man Utd’s reputation with his antics is a worry over his arrival.

Anti-Football Claims:
The parking the bus talk is another, it is a contrast from the football Man Utd have always been known to play even though it took another hit with LvG. If van Gaal’s football was boring, Jose Mourinho would not be bringing anything spectacular either.

Journey Man:
The special one changes clubs easily and Man Utd fans would want some degree of stability after quick changes at the managerial helm in the past seasons. The Portugese has spent no more than 3 years in any club stint and fans would be hoping the next one would be last for a long time.

The Giggs' Fanclub:

A section of Old Trafford would like to see Ryan Giggs become the next manager, problem is Ryan Giggs has no interest in being an understudy again and with Mourinho coming in, it looks like the Welsh Wizard would have to leave the club and hope for his time to come around again.

THE PROs

Fear Factor:
Man Utd fans crave this so much, they would give anything to see opposing team play six in the midfield. Mourinho can bring back that much needed fear by playing to United’s strength and against team’s weaknesses than against team’s strength to his team’s weakness something so common of late at Trafford.

Maximize Potential:

A lot of players at Old Trafford are playing way below their potential, Marcos Rojo, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay, etc. players who had a good reputation about themselves before they came to Manchester. Mourinho, over and over, has brought out world class abilities from players who looked so average.

Landscape Changes:
Antonio Conte, Pep Guardiola, Claudio Ranieri, Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino, perhaps Arsene Wenger (no shade intended) are currently in the league and the Red Devils getting Mourinho helps them stay in touch with their winning ways. Unlike LvG, Mourinho already knows the expectations required to get the job done.

Trophy Wins:

There is no denying Mourinho is one of the greatest coaches to be in the game. The special one bags trophies wherever he goes from an unbelievable Porto UCL win in 2004 to a formidable Inter Milan UCL win in 2010. He does it so well and Man Utd fans can expect to get silverware they are so familiar with on some consistent level. In the league win ratio, Mourinho currently leads the managers in it including Sir Alex.

Man Utd Reborn:
He might be no famous rapper called T.I. but Mourinho also hates to deal with mediocre. It is fair to say a lot of deadweight would be shipped off (pun intended) and while the youth system might take a hit, quality players would be turning up in United’s outfit every game.
