Petr Cech wins Premier League Golden Glove award

Petr Cech

Arsenal’s Petr Cech has won the Premier League Golden Glove award after keeping 16 clean sheets in his first season at the club.

The 33-year-old’s closest challengers are Manchester City’s Joe Hart – winner of last season’s award – Manchester United’s David de Gea and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel who all tied for second place with 15 clean sheets each.

Cech won the award three times with Chelsea and, after his £10m switch to the Gunners last summer, the no.1 shot stopper has proved a key member of Arsene Wenger’s side in 2015/16 helping his side to a second place finish.

The Czech international was beaten just 31 times in 34 Premier League appearances this term as Arsenal secured their best league finish in 11 years.

De Gea could have been joint winner of the award but failed to keep a clean sheet against Bournemouth in his club’s final fixture of the season.

The Spaniard conceded a stoppage-time own goal by Chris Smalling as United defeated the Cherries 3 – 1 to secure a Europa League group stage place.

The Premier League Golden Glove award was created in 2004/05 and since then Hart has picked up the prize outright on the most occasions, keeping more clean sheets than his rivals in four seasons. Cech has also won the Golden Glove four times, but shared the award with Wojciech Szczesny in 2013/14.
